Islam always has a specific program for humanity, and due to its social applicability, it cannot be indifferent to the executive tools of society, such as the formation of a government. Moreover, many Islamic rulings can only be implemented under the shadow of a government. The theory of Velayat-e Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist) is one of the most significant achievements of the political thought of the Shia school. Although the principle has a very long history among jurists and no one has denied the Velayat-e Faqih, the extent of the powers of the jurist and its absolute nature during the Occultation has always been a subject of discussion, raising questions and doubts. Among the doubts in this regard is the comparison between Velayat-e Faqih and dictatorship. The aim of this article is to clarify Velayat-e Faqih and its absolute nature so that, based on precise definitions and the delineation of the powers of the jurist, the essential difference between it and tyranny and dictatorship can be revealed. In the end, it will be concluded that the absolute nature of Velayat-e Faqih carries a different connotation that not only distinguishes it from a dictatorial government but also creates the conditions for the realization of Velayat during the Occultation.
